Really Nice Roach Surveyor's Transit Circa 1885

This is a fine polished example of this noted pioneer California maker. It has a a 4” compass needle, a compass vernier that reads to 30 seconds, and a 5" vertical arc . The transit stands 12 3/8" high and has a telescope 10.5 to 11" long. The optics are a bit cloudy, but the crosshairs and stadia are present. The Smithsonian NMAH website states that Roach moved to San Francisco in 1855, and was soon the leading instrument dealer on the West Coast.

The transit includes its original box but does not come with a tripod. Everything I have (mainly the transit, lens cap, and box) is included in the pics on this page.

Please see my
John Roach Maker Webpage for much more information about Roach.
