This is very nice transit made by Seelig & Son. The transit looks to have been restored or freshened up - it would look great on display. Please look at the 360 degree Spinner View of the transit - this will show you how nice the transit would look on display.
The transit is a pretty standard size - the telescope is 11 inches long and the needle is 4.5 inches. The vials have liquid. The vernier reads to 30 seconds. I only see the vertical crosshair, and the optics are only somewhat clear - not sharply defined.
I believe this to be circa 1910 based on the serial number of 1708.
The transit comes with everything you see in the pictures, including what looks like a replacement box.
In terms of flaws - the slow motion apparatus seems to have suffered an impact at some point. The set thumbscrew rotates but at an awkward angle. Everything seems to work but the transit rotates very tightly. Needs oiling.
Please see my Seelig Makers Webpage for more info about this surveying instrument maker (and you will find a link to Seelig's 1902 Catalogue there).
