Circa 1828 Stancliffe Compass with a Very Early and Rare Transiting Scope - Joel Evans Surveyor Collection
An amazing collection owned by a Pennsylvania surveyor in the 1830s et seq. The Stancliffe features a transiting telescope - surely one of the earliest transiting telescopes made. This compass likely pre-dates by a few years the invention of the modern transit by William Young. The collection of artifacts, drafting equipment, and contemporaneous surveys makes this an incredible and important collection relating to pre-1850 America.
