This is just an incredibly cool plain compass made by John Temple. The compass and adapter were designed to fit in a leather pouch, which the surveyor would wear attached to his belt!!! The ultimate portable laptop of its day!
Dale had a good number of incredible instruments in his collection. But this compass called out to me the moment I saw it. I tried to buy this compass individually from Dale, but he wouldn't sell it. I had to buy the entire collection to get this compass.
There is a good reason why miniature vintage surveying instruments sale for a huge premium (like 2x) - they are pure eye candy. This Temple compass takes the cake though - a circa 1850 miniature compass made by one of the most sophisticated instrument makers at that time - and a compass that fits in a pouch designed to be carried on the surveyor's belt.
Just simply amazing.
Please see my John H Temple Makers Webpage for more info about this very special surveying instrument maker.
