This is another very interesting wood compass with a unique form factor that Dale owned for years.
The compass has a brass divided ring with a hand printed compass card. The printing on the card is still very crisp.
This compass was made to use on hilly terrain. Note that the compass can tilt in up or down, which allowed the surveyor to take bearings on hills by keeping the compass in a level position. This feature is uncommon in brass compasses (Platt and James Reed made compass that could tilt like this, for example). But this is the first wood compass I have ever seen that tilts.
The compass measures 12 inches long.
I believe this unique compass would make a great addition to any early American compass collection.
