Herr & Seelig
1884-1898


L. R. Strassberger an instrument maker in Chicago was succeeded by the partnership of Herr & Seelig in 1884. Peter Herr was born in Gerlacseim, Baden Germany on December 10, 1851 and died in Chicago on November 1, 1938. Roman Seelig, a brother-in·law of Peter Herr, was born in Blesen, East Germany on November 22, 1848. He came to the United States in 1862. He died in Chicago on May 3, 1924.

In 1884 Roman Seelig and Peter Herr joined to form the partnership of Herr & Seelig, they purchased the business of Leo R. Strassberger of Chicago, IL. This partnership lasted until 1893 when Roman Seelig joined with Edmund Kandler to form Seelig and Kandler. The Seelig and Kandler partnership was short lived lasting only 2 years, the partnership was dissolved in 1895.

Peter Herr went on to create Peter Herr & Company, Edmund Kandler created Kandler & Gaertner, and Roman Seelig created R. Seelig Company.

Peter Herr & Co. existed until 1906, when a corporation under the name of Eugene Dietzgen Co. Factory was organized as an Illinois corporation. Peter Herr worked for Eugene Dietzgen Co. until he retired on March 1, 1912.

Roman Seelig continued business on his own until 1905 when he changed the company name to Seelig and Son. This lasted until 1917 when his son (Edward Seelig) died unexpectedly at the age of 11.
