Sight Vane holder compartments in wood box are broken.

Main plate is about 14.5 inches long.

Needle is 5.25 inches long.

Liquid vials have liquid and bubbles

Chain counter works

Needle lifter works

One site vane thumb screw is not original – it’s a replacement that doesn’t look close to being the original

About 70% of the original label is present

In the compass face you have four silver like studs securing the compass face. The stud faces look white when the light from my camera lighting reflects off them. They all four look silver faced without lighting.

Both site vanes are bent inward from falls

William Ewin was a talented maker int he late 1830s. Please see
my Ewin makers Webpage

Nice Lightly Used Roach Compass

John Roach plane compass made in San Francisco Circa 1880

Have some corrosion on the compass face where the screws are attached. Needle lifter works OK

Compass is 12 inches long with a 4.25 inch needle.

Both level levels hold liquid

Compass is painted black, which appears to be the original finish for this instrument.

I think the compass is slightly used because I don’t see much wear.

Staff adapter is missing

Box has some use marks on it such as the site
vane holddowns are gone. But otherwise the box looks to be in very nice condition with a nice label at 429 Montgomery St.

Cool Early Vernier Unsigned Compass

My Image
My Image
My Image

I think this is a very neat compass

11 inches long

Needle 5 inches long

Compass reads to 30 minutes

Vernier reads to +/-4° (must be an old Northeast based compass)

Numbers on compass dial appear to be punched rather than engraved

Sight vanes appear to be slightly bent in. You might be able to bend them back, but I don’t think it is worth doing. Vanes are 6 inches tall.
